We often think that using long, complex sentences makes us sound smarter. The opposite is often true! Clear communication is about being understood.
- Instead of saying: “Despite the fact that I have a great deal of experience in the domain of marketing, I am currently seeking new opportunities that will allow for the further development of my professional skill set.”
- Try this: “I have significant marketing experience. I am now looking for a new role to grow my skills further.”
See the difference? It’s direct, confident, and easy to follow.
Your Turn: Take a complex thought you have about your career goals and try to explain it in two or three short, simple sentences.
Lesson 2: The Vocabulary Vitamin
Just like your body needs vitamins, your language needs strong, active words. Start by replacing common, weak verbs with more powerful alternatives.
- Instead of “make,” try create, build, design, formulate.
- Instead of “get,” try achieve, obtain, receive, acquire.
- Instead of “good,” try efficient, effective, valuable, proficient.
Your Turn: Write one sentence about your greatest strength using a “powerful” verb. For example, “I designed a new filing system that saved my team five hours a week.”
Let’s Talk Interviews: Speaking the Language of Success
The job interview is where your spoken English skills are truly put to the test. Let’s tackle the most common opening question: “Tell me about yourself.”
Many people make the mistake of either reciting their entire resume or giving a short, uninspired answer. The secret is a simple formula: Present -> Past -> Future.
A Common, Weak Example: “I am Priya. I have completed my B.Com. I am looking for a job in accounting.”
This answer is not wrong, but it lacks energy and detail. It doesn’t sell you.
A Beautiful, Confident Example (The CADD NEST way):
“Good morning. I’m Priya.
(Present): Currently, I’m working as a Junior Accountant at ABC Corp, where I handle accounts payable and assist with monthly financial reporting. I’ve become very proficient with Tally and Excel, and I particularly enjoy finding ways to make our reconciliation process more efficient.
(Past): I completed my B.Com with a specialisation in Finance, which gave me a strong foundation in accounting principles. During an internship, I was praised for my attention to detail when I identified a recurring invoicing error, which saved the company a significant amount.
(Future): I’m really impressed with your company’s work in the financial tech space, and I’m looking for a role where I can take on more responsibility and contribute my skills in a fast-growing environment. I’m eager to apply my knowledge to help your team succeed.”
